What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp represents a point in time relative to 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. Traditional Unix timestamps commonly use seconds, while JavaScript commonly represents time as milliseconds since the same epoch.

Unix seconds      1790667000
Unix milliseconds  1790667000000

UTC vs local time

A timestamp identifies an instant. UTC and local time are different representations of that same instant. Negative Unix timestamps represent instants before the Unix epoch.

Local-time interpretation uses your browser's native timezone rules. Daylight-saving transitions and other timezone edge cases may vary by browser and operating system.
